Global Needs
In 2006, companies spent $200 billion developing new energy projects worldwide, according to the study by the consulting firms John S. Herold Inc. and Harrison Lovegrove — an amount larger than the economies of 147 countries. The World Bank has stated that the number one factor in improving the standard of living for the world’s poor is inexpensive and reliable electricity. And according to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), power is the number one contributor to greenhouse gas and other noxious emissions, the primary factor in global warming.
Solutions for a Greener Grid
Optimal Technologies provides end-to-end optimization technologies to the electric power industry – for both power suppliers (utilities and system operators) and power users (residential and commercial building owners and managers). Optimal’s unique solutions create a more efficient, integrated power grid while providing power consumers with knowledge and control to better manage and conserve energy. Implementation of Optimal’s technologies allows for multiple significant environmental benefits to be met including improved air quality, cleaner water, and water, natural gas, and other natural resources conservation.
On the Electric Power Supply Side -- Optimal’s unique electric power grid optimization software, AEMPFAST:
- Provides a power grid system “tune up”, creating a more efficient system, and reducing fuel use, air emissions, and cooling water consumption. AEMPFAST typically allows a 5-10% increase in deliverable power over the existing grid without adding new generation or wires, (Note: Carbon reductions are 3 to 1).
- Maximizes use of existing grid resources and avoids the need for costly system expansions that have adverse environmental and land use effects.
- Reduces emissions via new “least emissions” grid planning and operating methods, including detailed strategies for maintaining grid performance while reducing use of fossil fuel generation.
- Improves “intelligent” integration of renewable resources into the grid for best overall benefit, including wind, solar, geothermal, etc. AEMPFAST improves the quality and accuracy of detailed planning and feasibility studies.
- Improves the cost-effective deployment of energy efficiency and demand response strategies and equipment. AEMPFAST identifies and ranks specific locations within the transmission and distribution (T&D) grid at which the greatest system improvements and performance will be found.
- Facilitates the measurement and implementation of emissions credits and green trading programs and incentives.
On the Electric Power Use Side -- Optimal’s unique building automation and energy management system, SUREFAST:
- Empowers consumers to use electricity more intelligently and efficiently.
- Provides a venue for utilities to offer customers win-win demand response programs to reduce power usage during peak times.
- Delivers reduced demand to utilities at key grid locations during peak power usage, mitigating the need for additional generation.
