SMARTGRID™ ANALYSIS, OPTIMIZATION AND MANAGEMENT SERVICES
Optimal's AEMPFAST and SUREFAST end-to-end solutions combine to create a true SMARTGRID: An electric power system that is efficient, interactive, self-balancing, reliable and environmentally responsible.
Solutions For The Grid of the 21st Century
To serve multiple economic, defense and security, public health, and environmental goals of the 21st Century, regional and national electric power grids must become -- from end-to-end and in previously unimaginable detail -- transparent, integrated, newly efficient, reliable, instantaneously responsive, and secure, all to a degree until now primarily conceptual. Optimal's emerging technologies -- fast, precise, scalable, flexible, robust, and accurate -- provide the basis for a new "operating system" on which the grid of the 21st century -- the "SMART GRID" can be realized.
Todays Needs
In 2006, companies spent $200 billion developing new energy projects worldwide, according to the study by the consulting firms John S. Herold Inc. and Harrison Lovegrove — an amount larger than the economies of 147 countries. The World Bank has stated that the number one factor in improving the standard of living for the world’s poor is inexpensive and reliable electricity. And according to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), power is the number one contributor to greenhouse gas and other noxious emissions, the primary factor in global warming.
Worldwide Challenges
All of the world’s grid systems are in trouble and all are designed to serve end-users, including businesses, educational facilities, and homes. Making these end-users more efficient means less load on these troubled grids and less greenhouse gas and other noxious gas emissions. Wide-scale power supply systems today operate under many challenges that include (1) the outdated, constrained, congested, and highly inefficient electric power network itself – the generators, transmission lines, substations, distribution wires, and meters – collectively, “the grid” – assembled piecemeal over 100 years; and (2) the outdated, functionally limited technology – basically unchanged for 40 years -- that today is used to design, analyze, and operate electric power networks. This technology is absolutely limited in its ability to “see deeply into” the grid and rapidly fine-tune it, to create what can be referred to as a “transparent” electric power network, and thereby to achieve potentially significant operating, economic, and environmental efficiencies.
Optimal Solution
Optimal has developed a new complex network optimization technology that overcomes the theoretical and functional constraints of currently-used network analysis technologies, and can analyze the vast, dynamically changing data from electric power networks at unprecedented levels of detail, accuracy, and speed, taking into consideration multiple simultaneous system objectives, and can identify hundreds of specific adjustments that collectively can find significant efficiencies of 10% or more while simultaneously increasing reliability to otherwise unprecedented levels thereby avoiding blackouts altogether.
